Over one-quarter of the American landscape is covered by public land, regulated by federal, state, and municipal agencies with multi-use-based missions. In the west, the Federal government manages approximately 47% of all land. Sensitive wildlife, plants, and surrounding habitat characteristics are key resources to maintaining healthy and sustainable landscapes. Many policies exist at state and federal levels to ensure the maintenance of these natural resources while permitting other uses, such as energy development and resource extraction. For any project proponent, these policies can present a complex challenge with the potential for significant impacts on project cost and timeline.
